Forensic Genetic Genealogy
Legislation
Enacted Md. Code Ann., Pub. Safety § 2-507 — one of the first two state forensic genetic genealogy statutes in the nation. Establishes that a forensic genetic genealogical DNA analysis and search may not be initiated without judicial authorization and specified certifications; limits FGG to violent crimes and unidentified human remains; restricts searching to databases that provide explicit notice of law-enforcement use; imposes licensing, training, and oversight requirements; and requires publication of FGG policies. Frequently cited as a national model. Enacted May 30, 2021 under Article II, Section 17(c) of the Maryland Constitution.
