FBI Approves Rapid DNA Cartridge for Evidence Samples
July 8, 2026
Connecticut has developed one of the most advanced statewide Rapid DNA programs in the U.S., offering a national model for crime-scene-based deployment. Administered through the Connecticut Division of Scientific Services, the program includes a statewide network of Rapid DNA kiosks located in 11 major police departments and state police facilities. This network allows trained law enforcement personnel to process qualifying crime scene samples locally, rather than sending every sample to the state laboratory.
The Connecticut program focuses primarily on crime-scene evidence rather than booking-station arrestee testing. Officers collect suspected single-source DNA samples, insert the swab into a Rapid DNA cartridge, and obtain a DNA profile in approximately 90–96 minutes. The profile can then generate investigative leads through database searches and case-to-case associations.
Mobile Rapid DNA Response
Connecticut also deploys Rapid DNA technology in mobile forensic units that can respond directly to major crime scenes. This capability allows investigators to obtain DNA intelligence during the critical early stages of an investigation.
